In short

Preview can type into a PDF form, but you still look up every value. Kempt’s Fill this form reads the form, finds each answer in your own papers (ID, lease, payslips, tax papers) and fills the boxes it can prove, showing the paper each value came from. Boxes it can’t prove stay empty for you, and it saves a filled copy next to the original.

Without any app

  1. Open the form in Preview

Double-click the PDF. If it has fillable boxes, click into each one and type. If it is a flat scan, use Tools › Annotate › Text to place text on the lines.

  2. Keep your details at hand

Most forms ask the same things: full name, date and place of birth, address, ID or passport number, tax or social security number, bank details. A note with them saves digging every time.

  3. Mind the date format

US forms want MM/DD/YYYY, French and Spanish forms put the day first. Split boxes, like a social security number in 3 + 2 + 4, need the number cut the same way.

  4. Keep the blank original

Choose File › Duplicate before you type, so the empty form stays clean for next time.

With Kempt

  • Drop the form on the notch

Drag a PDF form onto the notch, or use Finder › Services › Fill Form with Kempt, or Dossiers › Fill a Form. The boxes fill in live as Kempt reads them.

  • Every value cites its paper

Click a box to see the paper its value came from and how many of your other papers agree. Dates follow the form’s own format, and split numbers are cut into their boxes.

  • What it can’t prove waits for you

Unsure boxes get a badge and a plain reason, and a guided pass takes you through them. Boxes for someone else (a spouse, a witness, the office), signatures and amounts are never filled. Kempt saves “<name> (filled).pdf” and never changes the original.

Questions people ask

Which forms does it work with?

PDF forms with fillable boxes are filled directly. On flat or scanned forms, Kempt reads the printed labels and offers each value as a suggestion you confirm. In our tests on six official US forms, the W-9 and W-4 among them, it wrote no wrong value.

Does my information leave my Mac?

No. The form and your papers are read on your Mac by Apple’s on-device model. Social security, passport, ID and bank numbers are masked on screen until you hover them.

Does it sign the form for me?

No. Signature boxes are left for you, like every box that belongs to someone else.

Is it part of Kempt?

Yes, it is included. After the 14-day trial, saving a filled copy needs the one-time licence.
