In short
A safe organizer shows its plan before acting, leaves alone what it isn’t sure about, never deletes, and lets you undo days later. Kempt proposes a name and a folder for each file, moves only what you tick, keeps a journal of every move, and puts anything back from Activity.
Without any app
Make a backup first
Time Machine to an external drive takes ten minutes to set up and turns any mistake into a restore.
Move, don’t delete
Put doubtful files in a “To sort” folder instead of the Trash. Deleting is the only step that can’t be reversed by hand.
Note what you changed
If you rename by hand, keep the old name in a note or as a Finder comment so you can find the file under either name.
With Kempt
See every move before it happens
Each file shows its new name, what it was called and where it will go. Nothing moves until you click Tidy.
Doubtful files are never moved
When Kempt can’t tell what a document is, it goes to “Needs a look” with the reason. Automatic filing skips it.
Undo from Activity, any day
Every move is journaled with its reason. Put back one file, a whole batch or everything a search shows, even after a restart.

Questions people ask
What happens if I edit a file after Kempt moved it?
Undo moves your edited file back as it is. If its old place is now taken, Kempt keeps it in Activity rather than overwrite anything.
Can I keep some folders out of it?
Yes. Settings › Library › Never touch takes folders, single files and name patterns such as *.key. Kempt never lists, moves or trashes them.
Does Kempt ever delete files?
No. Clean Up sends items to the Trash, and every one of those can be undone too.
